Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the highest civil award of Mauritius, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. The honor was bestowed by Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Tuesday. Modi is the first Indian to have received the honor for his exceptional contribution towards strengthening India-Mauritius ties.
PM Ramgoolam announced during the ceremony that Modi was chosen for this award considering his consistent efforts towards developing diplomatic and cultural relations between the two nations. The award is also the 21st foreign honor the Indian Prime Minister has been bestowed with by a foreign nation, which indicates his growing popularity globally.
Indian Prime Minister, PM Modi, is on a visit to Mauritius on the official request of PM Ramgoolam. The focal point of the visit is bilateral relations and both leaders haggling over trade, investments, and cultural exchanges.
In a move of India's commitment towards its diaspora citizens, PM Modi declared granting Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to Prime Minister Ramgoolam and First Lady Veena Ramgoolam. It is a reflection of India's strong historical connection with Mauritius and Mauritian citizens.
The OCI card ceremony was conducted in a grand public ceremony with a gathering of over 3,500 and attended by members of the Mauritius Cabinet. Happily, said PM Ramgoolam, "This is a nice and pleasing honour for me and my wife." India has introduced OCI in March 2024 to the Indians of Mauritius, seven generations of their descendants. Now, there are 22,188 Indian citizens and 13,198 OCI card holders in Mauritius.
The PM Modi visit again marks the two nations' historical relationship and continues to strengthen historical, economic, and cultural bonds.
